The German Classic Car Index (DOX), published by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), has served since 1999 as an indicator for the development of demand for historic vehicles in Germany. The index is based on a representative selection of 88 models, evaluated by the specialist classic-analytics, and takes into account registration figures—excluding rare auction highlights.
As of January 1, 2025, the DOX reached a value of 2,985 points, corresponding to a slight increase of 1.85% compared to 2024. Since the base value of 1,000 points in 1999, the index shows a long-term rise of 198%, underscoring the growing cultural and societal significance of classic vehicles.
Despite challenges such as inflation and economic stagnation in 2023/2024, the market remains stable—a clear sign of the enduring fascination with automotive history. Longer delivery times for new vehicles have shifted perceptions of used models and highlight the growing need for professional restoration and documentation of everyday classic cars.
In focus: Models with strong demand, such as the Ford Capri I (historically +100% over four years) or the VW K70/Passat (+92.7%). International icons like the Pontiac Firebird (+63.6%) and Toyota Celica (+39.3%) round out the Top 10. These trends demonstrate how expert evaluations—based on condition, provenance, and historical relevance—are essential for preservation.
At the RYW Club Museum, we use these insights to maintain our collection: from in-depth research to climate-controlled storage. The market remains stable, yet true value lies in cultural education — not speculation.
