History

Rubens Gonçalves Barrichello [pronunciation: ˈhubẽjs bahiˈkɛlu] (born 23 May 1972 in São Paulo) is a Brazilian racing driver. Barrichello started in a total of 323 Formula 1 races between 1993 and 2011. In 2002 and 2004 he finished as vice-champion (runner-up) driving for Ferrari. At the end of the season 2002 Barrichello was vice-champion behind Schumacher, and Ferrari once again won the Constructors’ Championship.

Introduction to the car

The Ferrari F2002 was one of the most dominant cars in Formula 1 history and was developed by Scuderia Ferrari for the 2002 season. It was first used at the Brazilian Grand Prix, initially only by Michael Schumacher, while Rubens Barrichello drove the previous F2001. Barrichello received the F2002 starting from the San Marino Grand Prix.

Season highlights

In the 2002 season Ferrari won 15 of 17 races, with Barrichello playing a key role as Schumacher’s teammate. He achieved four wins (Europe, Hungary, Italy and USA) and finished the season as runner-up with 77 points. The car was known for its reliability, aerodynamics and powerful V10 engine.

Controversies and milestones

The car became famous for events such as the Austrian Grand Prix, where Barrichello yielded the win to Schumacher under team orders. Schumacher secured the World Championship as early as July at the French Grand Prix — the earliest title victory in F1 history at that time.
