The Story Behind the Camera
The Kodak Vigilant Six-20 belongs to a distinguished line of folding cameras produced by Eastman Kodak between 1939 and 1949. Designed for 620 roll film, it delivered the popular 2¼ × 3¼ inch negative format that many amateur and semi-professional photographers favoured during the mid-20th century.
These cameras were part of Kodak’s broader effort to offer capable, well-engineered folding models that combined portability with solid optical and mechanical performance. The Vigilant series shared its basic body design with the more expensive Monitor cameras, but featured a simplified top plate and fully manual film advance controlled by a red window on the back.
Depending on the version, the Vigilant Six-20 was equipped with different Kodak Anastigmat or Anaston lenses and a range of shutters, including the Flash Kodamatic found on this example. Higher-specification models offered greater shutter speeds and more refined focusing, while still remaining accessible to a wide audience of enthusiasts.
