History
The Story Behind the Collection
This exclusive Asterix special edition was published by the Horizont Verlag in Filderstadt during the mid-1980s, with additional reprints appearing in the early 1990s. At a time when the adventures of Asterix and Obelix had already become a cultural phenomenon across Europe, the publisher decided to create a more refined and lasting presentation of the series.
Each volume was bound in dark brown imitation leather with elegant gold embossing, featuring the iconic figure of Asterix and a decorative geometric border. Rather than issuing the albums individually, Horizont combined four complete stories into each book and added carefully prepared editorial texts that offered readers deeper insights into the world of Goscinny and Uderzo.
The series eventually comprised nine main volumes, of which this set contains the first eight, together with the companion volume Uderzo – auf dem Weg zu Asterix. This additional book provides a closer look at the artistic development of Albert Uderzo and the creative process behind the famous Gaulish warrior.
Today, the Horizont Sonderedition is regarded as one of the most attractive and comprehensive German-language collector’s editions of Asterix. Its combination of high-quality binding, carefully curated content, and period charm makes it a distinctive piece of comic book history from the 1980s.

The set has been kept in a private collection under stable conditions. No restoration or rebinding has been carried out, preserving the original character of this 1980s luxury edition.
The RYW Club ensures continued careful storage in a controlled environment to protect the imitation leather bindings and the printed content for the future.

Provenance & Ownership History
This complete set of the Horizont Verlag Asterix Sonderedition originates from a private collection.
The volumes were published by Horizont Verlag in Filderstadt between the mid-1980s and early 1990s. The series began appearing around 1984/1986, with later reprints of several volumes issued in 1991–1992. The companion volume Uderzo – auf dem Weg zu Asterix was produced in the same binding style as the main series.
The set has remained in private ownership and shows the careful handling typical of a well-maintained collector’s collection. It has not been part of any institutional or public library holdings.
The books now form part of the RYW Club Museum collection, where they are preserved as a representative example of one of the most attractive German-language luxury editions of the Asterix series from the 1980s.
